Dry & Itchy Skin During Menopause

What it feels like

Your skin feels different — drier, thinner, sometimes itchy for no reason. You might notice it on your arms, legs, or face first. Products that worked for years suddenly aren't enough. Some women experience a crawling sensation under the skin (called formication). Others notice their skin bruises more easily or heals more slowly. It's as if your skin aged years in a matter of months.

Why it happens during menopause

Estrogen stimulates the production of collagen and natural oils that keep skin hydrated, plump, and elastic. During menopause, collagen production drops dramatically — up to 30% in the first five years. Skin becomes thinner, drier, and loses elasticity. The oil-producing sebaceous glands become less active, reducing the skin's natural moisture barrier. Dehydration and low omega-3 intake make things worse. The itching that some women experience is caused by the nervous system becoming more reactive as estrogen declines.

What helps

  • Collagen peptides (10–15g daily) — helps rebuild the collagen your skin is losing. Studies show visible improvements in 4–8 weeks.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids — support the skin's lipid barrier, helping it retain moisture.
  • Drink more water — hydration works from the inside out. Aim for 8+ glasses a day.
  • Use a rich, fragrance-free moisturizer — look for ceramides and hyaluronic acid.
  • Reduce alcohol — it dehydrates the skin and depletes nutrients.
  • Vitamin D — supports skin cell renewal and repair.
